Always Have a Purpose on the Ice!

It’s not as simple as just showing up for practice or at your training session. As a player, have your own agenda!

Know ahead of time what you plan on improving. Focus on something new or different you observe or notice on the ice today! There’s always something to be learned and refined!!

Stick Lie – Which one is right for you?

Stick Lie – Which one is right for you?

Your Stick Lie will have everything to do with your height and skating style, not to mention your posture and natural hand positions. Most common lies are numbered between 4-7. You may need to change your stick lie if you notice tape wear on the bottom of your blade in specific areas. If you see the tape is more worn closer to the toe of the blade, then you should increase the lie to a higher number. If the tape is more worn closer to the heel of the blade, then you should lower the lie number. Your goal is to have your stick blade remain flat on the ice as often as possible with the tape wearing out evenly across the full length of the blade.

Quick Release Shot Types

Quick Release Shot Types

4 Types of Quick Release Shots

  1. Silencer – It’s the Original no-sound, sweeping motion, wrist shot release which is very effective when shooting from the perimeter.
  2. Snap Shot – A loaded stick blade, 8 – 24 inches off the ice, making a snapping sound when impacting the puck.
  3. Wrist-Snap Combo – A slight push with no sound, usually changing the angle inward towards the body with a snap action finish. This shot keeps the goalies on their toes!
  4. White Ice Snap Shot – The blade is loaded behind the puck (usually between 4 – 6 inches on the ice), releasing with a snapping action.

Hockey Training Tip – Pass to where the Player is Going

Hockey Training Tip – Pass to where the Player is Going

When passing the puck, aim to where the Player is Going!

While this might seem obvious, some players pass to where the player currently is, instead of where they are heading.

Hockey Training Tip – Look Before you Shoot

Hockey Training Tip – Look Before you Shoot

Look Before you Shoot

Some players look down at the puck when shooting. I encourage players to feel the puck on the blade while keeping their eyes on the target. This may take time and repetition for some players to become comfortable and more consistent with this process, but can make a world of difference!
